Can eggs cause acid reflux ? Read this to know the truth
I don’t know the textbook answer to this one, but with a basic understanding of digestion and the anatomy is stomach and esophagus we can make a reasoned answer.
Proper digestion of protein requires an acid environment. So when we eat protein, the stomach produces more acid to aid in digestion of the protein. So any meal high in protein will result in significantly more acid than a comparable meal low in protein. Eggs are very high in protein, a little in the yolk and the white is albumin, pure protein. So eating eggs is bound to increase acid production significantly.
Two things to consider. One, in the US we almost have a cult following for protein. We want high protein foods, and we consume probably twice the amount of protein (or more) than we need each day. The daily requirement fo the “average” adult is 0.5 gram per kilogram of lean body weight. That means 35 grams for a 70 Kg person, or a little over an ounce. From what I have seen, we get that in one meal. The extra protein over what our needs are is wasteful, and doubly so if our protein source is from animals. Animal source protein is much more expensive than plant sourced protein. But I digress, off topic. Basically we eat a lot more protein than we need.
The next point is that acid reflux is not just acid production, but acid traveling up past the cardia into the esophagus. There are several factors that contribute to this. One is the volume of the meal — larger meals are more likely to produce reflux than smaller meals. Another factor is pressure within the stomach — gas production, ingestion of carbonated beverages, pressure on the abdomen from bending at the waist and other activities can increase pressure on the abdomen and cause reflux. Yet another factor is body position. If the body is horizontal, gravity no longer helps keep stomach contents in the stomach. Lastly, the competence of the cardia. Some people have a “loose” cardia, and some food and drink will actually relax the cardia, making reflux more likely. Peppermint and alcoholic beverages are examples.
So, a meal if just eggs will definitely increase acid production, so if you are prone to reflux, keep that in mind and do the things that will minimize the reflux part of acid reflux.
